Visiting Families in Need with WVM
Visiting Families in Need with WVM
By Katrin
“Ever thought about being… a volunteer worker? Many times I did, but I never took action, till I joined the Dutch charity team Gewoon Doen a couple of weeks ago. At one of our meetings I met Michael and got to know more about WVM. I then decided not only to organize help, but to get directly involved. So in October I started my first visits to families that WVM is supporting. A little nervous at first - feeling like a stranger coming to visit and observe somebody’s life I had no connection with before. But everywhere I came I was heartily welcomed, so I soon forgot about being nervous. All the families I visited face hard living conditions. Accommodation is usually cramped and in poor state. The material support they get from the WVM, i.e. food, medicine, and clothes, makes it a little easier, and alleviates part of their worries. But the material support is not the only help they need. I experienced that the emotional or social side is very important to all of them. Talking about what happened during the last days or weeks and especially listening to their stories and understanding their point of view is very, very important. Like all of us they need to talk to others about problems and worries, as well as the nice moments that happen in their lives. It is good to know that we can be there to share this and to remove the feeling of being alone with their difficulties. I heard different stories that deeply touched me and I have met strong people who permanently impressed me! I know that I made the right decision and I’ve experienced a lot during the last weeks. Remembering the days volunteering I always remind myself not to take anything I have for granted. Beyond that my experiences show me that a helping hand needs not to be in first place material, but personal and emotional. I will go on working as a Volunteer and I am looking forward to meet all the people again!” (Katrin)
